Peer Review Process

All submissions are initially assessed by the Editor-in-Chief, who decides whether or not the article fits the scope of the journal and is suitable for peer review. The submission will then be passed on to a pair of specialist Editors for each of the sections in the journal (Design; Technology; Practice; Humanities). Submissions considered suitable by the specialist Editors are then assigned to one or more experts to peer review the paper. Efforts are made to have a minimum of one reviewer that is independent from AJAR or ARENA. If this is not possible then the Editorial Board may be assigned as reviewers, if experts in the relevant field. All reviewers will be asked to assess the article for originality, relevance, clarity, validity, and sound methodology and must declare any competing interests.

The journal operates a ‘double-blind’ peer review process, meaning that authors and reviewers remain anonymous for the review process. The review period is expected to take around four weeks. Reviewers are asked to provide formative feedback, even if an article is not deemed suitable for publication in the journal.

Based on the reviewer reports the editor will make a recommendation for rejection, minor or major revisions, or acceptance. Overall editorial responsibility rests with the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, who is supported by an expert, international Editorial Board.

Authors are permitted to suggest up to three potential peer reviewers during the submission process. The journal does not guarantee to use these suggestions. All reviewers must be independent from the submission and will be asked to declare all competing interests.
